Amber jumped out of a plane at 10,000 feet for a charity skydive to raise money for Winston’s Wish, along with her friend Poppy. Amber’s mum died when she was 19 and she shares her grief journey on a podcast and Instagram account @thegriefgangpodcast
Tell us about your fundraising challenge
I have decided to take part in the 10,000ft charity skydive for Winston’s Wish! I know, a bit bonkers isn’t it? I could have just done a cake sale, but where’s the fun in that?!
Why did you decide to do a charity skydive?
I decided to sign up for the Winston’s Wish charity skydive because it is something I have always wanted to do. What better excuse to do it and raise money for charity?! I think the most difficult part will be sitting on the ledge waiting to jump. But, I know when it’s time to jump, those fears or difficulties will disappear, because I know this jump and all the fundraising that has gone towards it, will help support maybe another 19-year-old girl like me who just lost her mum.
Why did you decide to support Winston’s Wish?
I decided to support Winston’s Wish as my charity because it is such an important and necessary cause. I lost my mum at the age of 19 and I wish someone or something had pointed me in the direction of Winston’s Wish. I hope with future funding and support, Winston’s Wish can receive even more recognition and attention so it can continue to support bereaved children and young adults. We need spaces like Winston’s Wish.
Tell us about your skydive
There really are no words for it, but I will try! The whole day was a mixture of emotions. From nerves and trembles to pure belly laughs. GoSkydive do such a good job of calming your nerves and giving you all the information you need, we knew we were in good hands! Leaping out of a plane is something I will never forget, the only work I have for it is euphoric. The adrenaline, even when I touched the ground, was still pumping!
I’m not normally someone who is lost for words, but that day I was. For all the right reasons! We got asked multiple times throughout the day about our Winston’s Wish t-shirts, beaming with pride we would tell them about Winston’s Wish and the reason why it’s close to our hearts. An emotional day to say the least!
Did you enjoy the skydive?
Yes, absolutely. I knew I would enjoy it, but I didn’t realise how much I would.
Would you do another skydive?
ABSOLUTELY! If they had asked me to go again, I have grabbed another harness and bolted for the next plane. There’s no feeling like it.
