Winston’s Book Club

Helping children to explore grief

Grieving children often experience a wide range of feelings, and it can be important to explore these to help them understand that this is normal. With this in mind we’ve launched Winston’s Book Club, a series of story books written for children up to 8 years old to help them explore their grief.

How it works

All you need to do is fill in the form on this page to set up your monthly payment and let us know where you’d like your books to be posted.

Set up your payment from as little as £8.50 per month and each month (for 12 months) you’ll receive a new book in the post focused on a different emotion a child may experience following the death of someone important to them. You will also receive a guide for adults to explain the story and help with conversations that might arise when reading, as well as including activities related to each feeling.

Your monthly donation will continue after the 12 months and we hope you’ll be able to keep supporting our work to help us be there for every grieving child across the UK. You can cancel at any time. Please visit our terms and conditions for more information.

About the books

The books introduce Molly and Max, who have learned that someone close to them has died. Each book shows Molly and Max visited in turn by a different feeling (such as shock, anger and confusion), which they experience after hearing the sad news, and how each feeling affects them personally. The aim of this is to show children that all experiences of bereavement are unique and that there is no right or wrong way to grieve.

As the books progress we get to know Molly and Max and see how they experience each of the feelings they encounter, with the help of their mum. Children reading the books will recognize that they have experienced a similar situation to Max and Molly, and this, along with completing the activities in the adult guide can help to form part of a “toolkit” which, along with the right kinds of support, can aid children in understanding their grief and starting to develop their own ways to navigate it.

How your support helps

The money raised through our book club, as well as covering printing and posting costs, will help to support the children and young people we support with services like our Helpline, text service and young people’s website.

Last year we directly helped more than 18,000  young people after someone close to them died. By joining our book club you can play your part in providing vital support for the children, young people and families who need us now, and in the future.
