Winston’s Wish recognised as ‘Standard Bearer’ by Plain English Campaign

Winston’s Wish, the leading childhood bereavement charity in the UK, has today been recognised by the Plain English Campaign as a ‘Standard Bearer’, following the publication of its Impact Report 2013/14, covering the charity’s growth, achievements and future direction.

The Plain English Campaign delivers annual awards recognising organisations and individuals who have made a concerted effort to present themselves using clear and concise English in their documents.

Following last year’s successful Plain English Awards for three of its publications, Winston’s Wish has now been recognised as a ‘Plain English Campaign Standard Bearer’. This means that Winston’s Wish continually reaches very high standards in its publications for both clarity and design.

Chrissie Maher OBE, Managing Director of the Plain English Awards, said:

“Winston’s Wish has continually produced exactly the kind of documents we want to see. We felt they deserved special attention for yet more great work.

It’s also nice to award such a worthy organisation. We’re delighted to recognise Winston’s Wish in this way. We expect them to continue to set a very high example as our plain English ‘Standard Bearer’.””.

Liam McKinnon, Press Officer at Winston’s Wish, added:

“We’re absolutely delighted to be recognised with the title of ‘Standard Bearer’. It’s important for all charities to communicate clearly and concisely, particularly when the subject matter is sensitive, and that is why it’s important to use Plain English when talking about death.

We put a real focus on using clear and sensitive language and imagery in our Impact Report. The design and direction given by Maple Rock, our design agency, really helped us shape an Impact Report which illustrates our work and deals with a difficult topic in a clear and thoughtful way”.

Each year, Winston’s Wish supports over 30,000 bereaved children and young people through an array of dedicated services. These in-depth support programmes include support following death as a result of accident, illness, homicide, suicide and also through military service.
