Helen: My 12Ks of Christmas challenge for Winston’s Wish

Helen is taking part in the 12Ks of Christmas challenge to raise money for Winston’s Wish, running 12K a week in the run up to Christmas. Helen received support from Winston’s Wish after her partner was diagnosed with cancer when their daughter was just one and she regularly supports us, donating money from the sale of several sweatshirts and t-shirts from her company Disko Kids to Winston’s Wish.

Why do you support Winston’s Wish?

I found the charity Winston’s Wish in 2007, shortly after we found out that my partner Ade had terminal melanoma cancer. Our daughter Lottie was just one at the time and our lives were basically turned upside down.

From Winston’s Wish I learnt how to support and guide Lottie through growing up without her Dad. I took endless photos and videos of Ade to build up a picture for Lottie when she was older and started a memory box after reading about them on the Winston’s Wish website.

I found so much helpful information on their website to enable me to support Lottie over the coming years. I’ve since used their Helpline and resources to support Lottie as we’ve hit different points in her life.

Helen - my 12Ks of Christmas challenge

How are you planning to complete your 12Ks of Christmas challenge?

I decided to set myself a goal of running 12K a week in the run up to Christmas – a total of 72Ks over six weeks! Exercise is great at keeping me focused so it’s a win-win doing this.

Why did you decide to take on the 12Ks of Christmas challenge?

I thought it would be a great way to support this great charity, Winston’s Wish. Without charity runs this year I appreciate that it has been harder to raise money through sponsored 5K and 10K runs and other events.

You can sponsor Helen on her JustGiving page here.

Fancy taking on your own 12Ks challenge? Complete 12K your way before 25th December. You could walk 1K a day for 12 days, cycle 12K in a day or, like Helen, run 12K a week – it’s up to you. Fundraising superstars who raise more than £100 will receive an exclusive race medal! Click here to find out more and sign up.
